Barbados, Caribbean
Barbados is a fantastic island for surfing. Annual international competitions with top surfers like Kelly Slater proof this year by year.
The most famous place for surfing is definitely Soup Bowl on the east coast with its spot Batsheba. In the case of easterly swells the break can be massive on a lot of days, so for sure not a place for beginners but a great challenge for experienced surfers and well worth a trip to Barbados. The main season for surf is the winter time between November and July where Barbados takes profit of the large Atlantic swells.
Teaching will be done on the south coast where the swells are softer and more suitable for beginners.
Spots:
A) Silver Sands
The spot is located directly at the Club Mistral center at Silver Sands beach. This place is a good and safe location for training the take off and the first experiences on the board if the waves are small in Silver Sands. As the waves break about 20 m from shore it is a safe place to teach with sandy bottom. On big days the current can be too strong for beginners when we will move to places like South point, Freights Bay and Long Beach.
B) South point
This place is located at the lighthouse and is a great left hander on most of the days. On big days it will be a good tip for experts but on average to small days it's a great teaching spot. The waves break not too far from shore so paddling distance is limited which makes it suitable for beginners and even kids. The place can be reached in about 10 min walk from the center or by car in 3 min. Generally a nice and safe location for a lot of days.
C) Freights Bay
Probably the safest place of all this bay is protected inside a bay and keeps off the big waves and chop as it is sheltered from wind. There is no current and mainly sandy bottom. Closer to shore it is possible to stand everywhere. This is the ideal location for teaching kids and absolute beginners. In the winter time there are good conditions on almost all of the days so it will be our main destination.
Freights can be reached by foot from Silver Sands in about 15 to 20 minutes or by car in 3 minutes.
D) Long Beach + Kayakers Point
These places will be used on days with smaller swells. There are waves almost every day so in case the other places don't work this is always the alternative. The breaks are close to shore so surfing is easy and safe. When the waves are small currents are slow which makes it easy as well.
