18|01|08 +++ Leisure and Tourism management

This is the third time that Club Mistral, le Morne, Mauritius has been kind enough to provide an input into the final year of  BSc Leisure and Tourism management degree in the faculty of law and management at Mauritius University. The module is Outdoor Recreation Education and I was invited to develop and teach the module to, part-time student and full-time student  in 2006 and full-time students in November 2007.

The module is run as a 2 week block course as I can only visit for short periods of time. It is also a management course and so the students are not expected to gain qualifications and experiences in the physical activities as in most outdoor education type degree courses in the UK. However, I felt it was important that as part of the module is concerned with safety and risk that they visit an established centre which has expertise in this area. So centre manager Felix generously provided the input to the first two groups and centre Manager Mathew this last group.

The presentations were extremely informative and the students very much appreciated the visit to the centre. Not only did they get to see how safety was managed in an adventure sports such as windsurfing and kitesurfing, but also details concerned with currents and the weather and the way the centre is managed was also explained. All but one (a German exchange student) of the 26 students is Mauritian and it is useful for them to see the involvement and skills of the Mistral team which includes Mauritian staff.
